County finds use for ebola grant

Calhoun County’s Health Care Coalition is planning to purchase 40 units of a protective gear designed to prevent the spread of highly infections diseases from patients to medical staff.
The coalition, which is comprised of representatives from the county Public Health Department, emergency responders, Stewart Memorial Community Hospital and other health care organizations, received $6,600 in state funding to use towards preventing the spread of infectious diseases, Public Health Administrator Jane Condon said during Friday’s meeting.
Cindy Carstens, vice president of nursing for the hospital, asked if the coalition would be interested in the protective gear, which feature a double shroud to be protect the wearer. She said each box of the shrouds costs about $620 and contains 20 of the suits. SMCH officials intend to distribute their 20 suits to the hospital and clinics, while the second box could go to Public Health to be distributed as those officials see fit.
