Calhoun County Freedom Rock pays tribute to veterans

Ray “Bubba” Sorensen, an artist from Greenfield, Iowa, has been painting the Calhoun County Freedom Rock, located on the courthouse square in Rockwell City.

He is an artist and photographer whose other activities have taken secondary importance to his Freedom Rock Tour. The tour, now in its second year, is expected to eventually provide each of Iowa’s 99 counties with its own unique tribute to the veterans of that county.

Tom Campbell, who is spearheading the fundraising effort for the project, along with Rockwell City Chamber of Commerce Director Theresa Hildreth, said there are still plenty of opportunities for people to participate in the project through the purchase of paving bricks to be used to create a patio area encircling the painted rock.
