On his visit to Lake City last week, Gov. Terry Branstad touched on a number of current event topics, including addressing whether he worried for his own personal safety in light of protests in a number of major American cities.
Branstad planned to travel this week to Cleveland for the Republication National Convention.
Republicans had been waiting for presumptive GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump to announce his vice presidential running mate; Branstad praised Sen. Joni Ernst, who asked that she not be considered for the post after a meeting with Trump earlier this month.
“I think she would have been a great choice,” Branstad said. “I understand her focus (on her duties as a U.S. senator). I was one that was promoting her and considering her.”
Branstad said he thought Ernst’s background as a state legislator, U.S. senator, farmer and military service member, as well as the fact that she’s a woman, would have made her a good asset for Trump’s ticket.
