Reports of an American alligator spotted at South Central Calhoun Elementary School last week were not exaggerated.
Of course, the alligator, a 7- to 8-year-old named Bog, wasn’t exactly on the loose in the building. It came with Blank Park Zoo K-12 Education Specialist Angela Tague, who also introduced kindergarten students to Pixie the pygmy hedgehog, Claussen the tiger salamander and George the Madagascar hissing cockroach.
Kindergarten teacher Tiffany Klaassen asked Macke Motors of Lake City to sponsor the zoo visit. The dealership paid for two programs, each presented to two kindergarten classes at a time, plus snacks and drinks for the students. Representatives of the car dealership attended the first presentation in Kris Nicholson’s classroom, taking a turn touching some of the animals after students had their chance.
